Welcome

Having lived and worked overseas, I've collected inspiration from all sorts of places, from the colours and chaos of faraway cities to the quieter landscapes of the Sussex coast, where I now live.  I'm as easily distracted by sunlight falling across a building in India as by a sudden flash of colour on a grey Sussex afternoon.  Holidays are particularly dangerous: I return with hundreds of photographs, a head full of ideas and the wildly optimistic belief that I'll paint them all.

Working primarily in oils, I'm fascinated by light, colour and atmosphere, particularly those fleeting moments that make you stop and look twice.  I'm less interested in painting exactly what I see than in capturing something of how a place feels.  I love loose brushwork, unexpected colour combinations and the happy accidents that happen when a painting takes on a life of its own.  The trick, I'm discovering, is knowing when to leave well enough alone.

My paintings are an ongoing adventure in looking, experimenting and trying not to overthink things.  Inspiration is rarely in short supply, whether I'm travelling somewhere new or walking the Sussex coast with my two dogs, who are generally far more interested in what they can smell than what I can see.
